Title: Liverpool Ghost hunt
Description: The Old Stableyard
Smithdown Lane
Liverpool

25th Of July 2008
The tunnels are in an area to the east of the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral in a rectangle bordered by Mason Street, Grinfield Street, Smithdown Lane and Paddington. They run beneath the brow of the Edge Hill, which is one of the highest points in Liverpool.
The reason for their creation is unknown. The most common presumption is that they were constructed to provide employment during the economic recession following the Napoleonic Wars. If this is true then the tunnels may be the oldest known job creation scheme. Other less widely held theories include preparing a refuge from Armageddon, passageways for secret activities; or an eccentric folly.
A more recent and practical theory is that the tunnels served the purpose of land reclamation. The site of the tunnels was previously an open sandstone quarry for at least 200 years before Williamson bought the land. This quarry consisted of a wide range of holes of varying depths meaning that during the early 1800s, the land was uneven, unsightly and unsuitable for building on.
Williamson recognised the potential of the land and made use of this by encouraging his men to build arches, mainly from bricks but occasionally out of sandstone to cover the old quarry pits. These arches started at the edge of the holes from the quarry and could support a great weight above them. Therefore the first formation of the tunnels was likely to provide support for the terraced gardens of his houses on Mason Street.
A paranormal history has been logged over the years but no investigations have been undertaken offering places to the public. One such sighting was witnessed by a young bog while on a school walk around of the tunnels he asked who was the man up above. At the time wax model were been in used showing how they worked on the tunnels and one was placed on ladders above, the teacher said it’s a dummy on the ladder but the boy said no not that, him hanging from the roof by a rope. On my visit I picked up the usual orbs and also a lot of fuzzy and blared pics with my camera but. some hear people voices and foot steps and one medium who visited with a radio station claimed that Mr Williams was un happy about the tunnels and he also said he did not like the staff working within there to.
