Hi, I have been using your basic sony mini tape recorder with external microphone for evp`s but have trouble picking anything out clearly on playback. There seems to be a lot of background noise. Just wondering what the best best type is. Are digital recorders better and if so, what type of software would I need... keeping in mind I am new at this and not a computer wizard, lol. Thanks for your help.
Cheers, Nicki.

Nicki, Believe it or not I use my camcorder, not only does it have great sound but you never know what is going to cross in front of the lens either.  I have heard evp's from the little recorders and they aren't clear, I am going to give you a website that may help you, the person who runs this site does alot of evp's and he has plenty of downloads so you can get rid of the static.http://www.ghost-tech.com/Downloads.php  Good luck with your evp's  Judy

You might want to check my forum here on this site in regards to EVP's:
http://www.supernaturalconnections.com/forum/posts/id_36/page_last/#r171

It is a little lengthy so I just put the url.

It explains my thoughts and theories in regards to EVP's. It works for me. But I have to admit that I use all methods and type recorders at the same time just in case.

I am just an outside the box kind of person. I don't limit myself to following the old ways but I would never suggest to abandon them. My train of thought involves adding new ideas and equipment to the old so as to cover all bases.

Hi TW, I am brand new here , but I just wanted to add my 2 cents to the question,I hope you dont mind.
In general, I use the Olympus VN4100PC with an external microphone, it is easy to operate, and allows 4 different folders but it can be confusing when it comes time to publish it, or add it as a file on the computer as it has to be converted to a wav. or wmv file.( I use Audacity,a free progran available on the net )
The one I would recommend..depending on your finances, is the Samson H-4, it was designed for musicians and records in stereo in a 360 degree area, but they are a little pricey at close to $300.00. I use this for remote areas where it wont be contaminated by any other background noise.

Hi TW, my group uses RCA digital voice recorders as they're user friendly, the software for your pc is internal and they're only around 40 bucks at wal mart. However, as LTCochran stated, you will need an audio program  to play them thru your pc. There are several free versions online, I happen to use wavepad. Just play with the different ones till you find one you like. Hope this helps.

Hi LT, Thanks for the 2 cents worth, lol. My music freak daughter seems to think this is a goer but at the price maybe santa can help. Cheers, Nicki.

Thanks Sepi, I`m thinkin the digital is the way to go. I`m not a computer wiz so muckin around with tapes would probably drive me nuts. I`m more your easy download, do it all for me type, lol. Am off to Dick Smiths next week to drive them crazy with questions about their equipment. Be curious to see what they say when I tell them why I want a recorder, can`t wait.
Cheers, Nicki.

Hi Judy, Have checked out this site and have to say its got heaps of info and is easy to understand. I like the way he "tells it as it is'. Its not all "this is guaranteed, will work every time" stuff. Have you read his book? Might go back and get it...  Cheers, Nicki.

G`day GB, Very interesting....I have your basic mini tape recorder so am going to try it without the external mic. I haven`t played with it for a while but think it may have a built in mic. Will this make a difference?
